Dotty Maureen's feeling very proud of her new project. The colours are very 'Spring-y' just makes you smile to look at it. This was a pattern free on t'Internet, Dotty did make a few adjustments, but, she says, it's been quite simple to make... even though it looks really difficult with those pointy borders... Prairie Points... then again, Dotty is very good at the figuring out stuff... I might have found it more of a battle...
Karen, like so many beginners, has decided she would like to make her quilt bigger... single bed size was mentioned but with the fabric she has we're stopping at a throw... which she will be glad of when she starts the process of quilting, just for a first project....
Wendy brought in some of her scraps in order to make a block or two for Helen's fund raising quilt. She scanned the Marsha book, as it's come to be known, to find something a little challenging but not too complex... we all do this me thinks... make it look difficult to those who are not in the know eh... he he he.
Gilly's going for it again... cutting up old curtains for a new project... we all remember Gilly uttering the words... "never again" when she was struggling with her last one but... hey ho.. more fussy cutting and curtain unpicking has helped her forget all the recent traumas... again though, I am sure it will be worth it. This next one will be based on the Garden Twist pattern ... now I have to tell you, while searching for a picture to show you I found loads of free quilt patterns... take a look here 
Ruth worked on the last few blocks for this quilt. She hasn't found it to be the easiest project, complicated by the fabrics that have no right way up... as I've said before, just one flick of a shape and your lost! Mr. Rubik might like to know about this one!
My Mum (Gwynneth) has finished stitching the 'crop circle' design on her quilt, she had marked the circles with pencil before sewing... most people have to do that really... circles are hard to do... well, if you want them to be round that is, he he he
Maggie was working on piano key borders but, once she had all the strips sewn together, she realised that it was all looking too 'orange-y'... not a problem as we do promote PMS (Pleasing My Self)... there will now be an inner border of 2 1/2" square followed by a wider border of that delicious brown fabric. All of the left over strips will be used to liven up the back...
Wendy finished her kaleidoscope quilt top and brought it in to sandwich. On entering our Quilt Cave she shouted that she was very cross with me!!... he he he, she had her backing already pieced but as she had passed by the 'Table Top Shop, wadding on the side' she had spied some of my new fabrics.... the Westminster ones... ooooo they're lovely. So, Wendy just had to change her plan.... 2 metres of perfectly co-ordinating fabric were purchased, a new backing was pieced and a beautiful sandwich was made... sorry to upset the apple cart Wendy... there are more new fabrics coming next week!! ha ha haWe meet again on Friday 11th March, 10am - 3pm.... want to see the new fabrics too?
Just a quick post to show you what's been going on, between chores... I've finished all the letters for my words and numbers for the dates. I was going to use traditional punctuation... but hey, wait a minute.... I still have a gazzzzzzzzillion scraps to play with... as you see in the picture... I'm making Maverick Stars... oh they are soooo easy to make... think I will need lots of em, just for the shear pleasure of the making them... woooohoooo.
During one of our meetings a few weeks ago, Helen asked us whether we would mind making some patchwork blocks for her. She wants to make a quilt for her son's school to raffle in order to raise money for their Panto later this year. Every year it gets harder to come up with new fund raising ideas but this 'tried and tested' way has never come up before.Each block will be 9", so if you want to help Helen you would need to make a block measuring 9 1/2". This is one of the blocks I made for the Portuguese Tiles quilt, I made too many and I'm happy to be able to contribute to a fun Pantomime.If you want to make a block, you can choose any colour and any design, all Helen needs is that they all measure 9 1/2" and she will do the rest of the work. You can drop them off at Caverswall Village Hall on Wednesdays or Fridays or any time at The Bank House Hotel in Uttoxeter, you could even post them there if you wish and they will save them for me to collect on Tuesdays.Right, lets see if we can get enough for this quilt, thanks for reading this.Update.... These letters are fun to make but my goodness they make a mess... I've got a very, very messy room now, wooooohooo... do you think that worries me? Heck no!.... I'm going back in there to make more mess, I need a few commas and some full stops and some numbers for the dates... then I will arrange everything to decide whether I will write more stuff... there won't be a label made for this one... twill have all the info right there, boldly on the front.
Joan The Shop added a little extra fabric to each of her 'too short' borders taking care to match up the road markings. She also re-did her corner appliques and... just to add to the work load, Joan has decided to add more appliqued words to each border... evidently she's loving the blanket stitch on her new Janome.
Ann joined us to take advantage of the tables. She had a rather large sandwich to make and she had seen my mention, in the last post, that we were expecting to be quiet and took full advantage of having full 5 tables all to her very own self.
Helen was able to make a little sandwich too. She stitched in the ditch of each little segment then round the edges. As you can see, she's now onto the shadow quilting... steady as she goes...
Dotty Maureen is working on the second part of the stitchy project, she's taking it very slowly on this one as she wants to work as a team with Helen, they are figuring out each bit together... tis not an easy project me thinks.
Shirley Lerly got lots done, she added her borders with corner stones, which look fabulous... that thin inner border makes all the dusky orange bits in the main focus fabric pop, pop, pop.... don't you agree? She pieced her backing from a most beautiful Moda fabric too.. we made her sandwich after hours... what devils we are... Barbie also finished her top, backing and sandwich.. also after hours, we need to quilt until 5pm I'm thinking... but then I guess we would still run over!... can you have too much fun? he he he
Arty Janet, who is more used to melting plastic bags then pressing seams on patchwork... is making it up as she goes along, it's fun to watch the creative process. This will be the back of a cushion with the front having a Rail Fence design, great colours eh! All fabrics purchased form my very own Table Top Shop, wadding on the side.
Gilly finished her quilt marathon only 2 days past the deadline, twas a gift for a relative so all was forgiven, if noticed at all... I have a full picture of the quilt to share with you another time... For now, Jilly is having a tough time trying to decide which project to start next... she has a long list, so she practiced making the No Waste Flying Geese
Wendy... you might not believe me, but she started yet another project! This time a kaleidoscope quilt. She finished off the last few whole blocks during our meeting and played about with a few filler fabrics... don't they look stunning!
Arty Beryl has many pieces of oriental type fabric and was eager to make a project with it... unlike myself who would have never cut into such beauties! ha ha ha I'm silly I know ... the black strips are folded pieces which will add dimension.... do I sound like I know what I'm talking about? he he he... I know what I mean so don't go worrying...
Irene's project is coming along nicely, I would say she has about a third of it joined together. She wasn't able to progress further though as she had forgotten to bring her pattern/design.
Joan The Shop didn't have the best of quilty days. She had measured her outer border a little bit too short without realising it so, when she stitched it into place it made the edges curl up, getting measurements just right is so important... too long and the edges will be wavy, too short and they make the edges too tight so they will pull.... here my Mum (Gwynneth) and Joan herself are sitting chatting as they unpick it all, shame...
Karen, another of our new ladies, added a few extra blocks to her beginner Rail Fence centre and after adding an inner border she has decided that we need to make it bigger... 2 1/2" wide piano keys for the next round, then we'll see whether we need another border after that...
Diane hasn't been able to join us for a few weeks but that hasn't stopped her progressing with this quilt... in fact it is finished all but the binding... this is a huge quilt and given that Diane had only made cushions and bags until now, I think we should take our hats off to her.. the colours are beautiful and the quilting is fabulous. We meet again tomorrow, Friday 4th March 10am to 3pm. We're expecting a rather quiet day with lots of the ladies unable to come so there should be lots of tables spare... should you like to come and join us....
I've been rooting in books and fabrics... always seems to make the clock tick faster... why does time have to fly when you are engrossed in rooting?... actually, I think it's because there's nothing to show for the hours that whizzz by, apart from the mess that is, he he he...
